EU insect approvals – disgusting or the future?

More and more insects are officially allowed in our food in the EU: mealworms, crickets, grasshoppers and, since 2025, even UV-treated mealworm powder. Critics refer to it as “disgusting food” – and not without reason.

Health concerns

  • Allergies: People who are allergic to shellfish or dust mites may also react to insect proteins.
  • Contamination: Poor breeding conditions can lead to bacteria, parasites or heavy metals.
  • Chitin & digestion: The insect shell can cause digestive problems in sensitive individuals.

Labelling requirement

The EU requires clear declaration of insect content – but hidden in ingredient lists as “partially defatted cricket powder,” it could easily be overlooked.

Conclusion

For some, they are a sustainable source of protein, for others, they are simply disgusting. The fact is: insects are here to stay – and if you want to avoid them, you have to read the ingredient lists carefully.
